What is SIP Trunking?
In non-technical terms, a SIP Trunk is a virtual connection
over the public internet or a virtual private network (VPN)
that connects switching equipment.
This is the basis of VoIP telephony.
In technical terms SIP Trunking is a Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) and streaming media service based on the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP). This is used to deliver telephony services to customers who have SIP-based IP-PBX facilities.
With the roll-out of fiber broadband from Eir (eir Fibre), SIP Trunks are now the alternative to ISDN and PSTN lines.
Going forward, the communications future is going to be an all-IP environment. The end of the public telephone network is in sight. SIP Trunking will be an integral part of the IP environment – the business-to-business and business-to-consumer calling paths.
So as a business, what does all this mean to you?
More and more of our customers are responding to the developments in the communications market and are migrating to SIP trunking services. They are realising proven average cost savings of around 50 percent.
Reduced costs are one thing and one not to be sneezed at. There are additional benefits like high-definition voice and operational benefits such as disaster recovery and high availability.
Another key benefit to SIP trunking is that a business can buy only the capacity it needs. Additional capacity requests are mearly a phone call, with no costly installation charges and little or no delay in provisioning. This means spending less money on telephony whilst getting the full end-to-end IP experience and quality.
